The Power of Five Minutes - Learning from Others QUICKLY!

I have been quite remiss of late in posting on the blog.  Always an excuse - but let's just say, life is insane these days. Quitting job, care giving to parents, moving (so selling and buying a house), graduation, dissertation - yikes.  Making myself stressed just writing it down. So, I have decided to make it a little easy on myself and do a series on some of the fabulous Ignite talks that I have been privy to as part of my previous position with Key Curriculum. If you have never heard of, seen or been a part of an Ignite event, they are pretty amazing.  Participants have 20 PowerPoint slides that auto advance every 15 seconds, giving them a total of five minutes to get their point across quickly, using both words and visuals.  You wouldn't think five minutes would be able to provide much insight, but you would be wrong - it is amazing what you can learn and say in five minutes.  I have often thought this approach would be a great one to use with students for...

Conferences as Professional Development?

Last week was a crazy, hectic and tiring week at both the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics (NCSM)  and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) conferences. I mentioned these conferences in my most recent post , which sad to say was over a week ago. The conferences, from a vendor perspective, are a lot of set-up, talking, preparing for big events we host, preparing for presentations I was doing, and just being constantly ready for the next day, which comes pretty quick after a 12-14 hour day of working! If you want a great perspective, read Karen Coe's blog Behind the Scenes at NCSM and NCTM . Despite the long hours, the sore feet, the loss of my voice, my overall feeling from both conferences was that they were both great events, and that it was both gratifying and encouraging to meet, talk with, and hear what math educators are doing in the 'real-world' to engage their students. Which leads me to my title - are conferences such as NCSM and ...

Math Ponderings for the New Year - Ignite Your Teaching

I thought it would be fun to post several math-related Ignite videos from events my company has sponsored in the past year as a way to inspire some thought and spark some creativity around math and how we teach it. I must admit to being a little brain dead and suffering a lack of thoughts for posting.  I have been writing 5-6 hours every day for my literature review and, while I realize I should be posting to my blog, I find I don't have the energy, so I am going to take the easy way out and let others do the talking for me! For those of you unfamiliar with Ignite, these are 5-minute presentations where the speakers have 20 slides that auto-advance every 15 seconds.  I have chosen just a few of my favorites here, but if you are interested in looking at more, you can find them at Key Curriculum Press Ignite. Here are several for your enjoyment (in no particular order). Some inspiring, some funny, but all thought provoking and things we should consider as we begin 2012. ...
